Osler Banquet ’23

The Osler Banquet of ’23 was notable for representing the rebirth of this core tradition for the McGill medical community. For three years, McGill medical students and physicians were unable to gather for the banquet in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, but last year they were able to celebrate once more with much pomp and circumstance.

The banquet was marked by many illuminating speakers, among them being; Dr. Rolando Del Maestro, renowned neurosurgeon and the preeminent sponsor of the McGill Osler Library and Osler Society; Dr. Mary Hague-Yearl, head librarian of the McGill Osler Society; Lilly Groszman and Neevya Balasubramaniam, then-presidents of the McGill Osler Society; and one of the winners of the Pam and Rolando Del Maestro Family William Osler Student Essay Awards, Emmanuel Adams-Gelinas.

Further, the Osler Banquet ’23 saw the revival of the traditional “Sharing of the Cup” ritual. Though, in keeping with the lessons we’ve learned from the pandemic, forewent sipping wine from the cup in order to instead pick from the cup in turn a quotation from Sir William Osler.

McGill Osler Society

Established in 1921, the Osler Society is McGill’s oldest student society. In the spirit of Sir William Osler, the Society aims to enrich the education of McGill students in medicine and other disciplines with lectures given by distinguished guest speakers, and with the presentation and discussion of papers concerning Humanities and the Social Sciences in Medicine. Furthermore, the Society puts a focus on developing philanthropy among medical students and on exploring enriching experiences that allow students develop into more well-rounded physicians.
